The world had never seen an army like the German army of WW2; as Winston Churchill once said, "If it is to live in peace it must never see another". At its high point, Germany's conquests extended from the French Channel ports in the West to Stalingrad in the East. Wehrmacht officers of WW2 were issued well made bakelite marching compasses to orient themselves in the field. This German WW2 OFFICER BAKELITE MARCHING COMPASS is in excellent condition, with a spot of darkening at the upper left and lower right dial, some stippling to the "mirror" plate at the underside of the lid, a flat/missing spot in the right edge of that "mirror", some light "browning" to the arrow at the front right case edge, and with some light scattered dusting and age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the compass is in excellent shape, with absolutely no cracking or other damage to the crisp black bakelite construction. Most interestingly, it remains fully functional, with the direction needle moving smoothly and easily. It bears the letter "A" stenciled in white on the black crackle finished metal front lid, sports the classic "mirror" plate at the underside of the lid, and carries the maker's code "cxn" molded into the lower front right case, denoting manufacture by Emil Busch of Rathenow.
